The Green Bay Packers have been known for turning undrafted free agents into quality NFL players. Immediately after the draft ends, it is always interesting to see which players teams pick up who did not hear their name called during the NFL Draft. With rookie camps beginning soon, the time is now for players to prove they belong on an NFL roster. During a call about the Packers draft, draft expert Todd McShay was read the list of signings and loved two players in particular.
Todd McShay Loves These 2 UDFA Signings By The Green Bay Packers
McShay responded very simply, “The two Georgia guys.” The two players he is referencing are linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson and defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse. Dumas-Johnson spent this past season at Kentucky, but before that was a Georgia Bulldog. In 2022, he was a first-team All-American when the team won a national championship. He racked up 70 tackles, four sacks, and three forced fumbles. Next season, he broke his arm and missed the entire year. This past year at Kentucky, he started 11 games and had 67 tackles. McShay had this to say about the signing.
“Dumas-Johnson’s intriguing because I think Green Bay wants to be rugged up front and Dumas-Johnson’s a thumper, physical guy. As an undrafted free agent, bring him in, special teams. He fits the prototype of what they’re looking for. He was on track but then he got injured, frustrated a little bit at Georgia and transfers to Kentucky.
“You don’t land at Georgia if you don’t have talent. You can see that he was a major contributor for a year-and-a-half playing next to Smael Mondon. As an undrafted free agent, give him a few thousands of dollars and let him come in with a chip on his shoulder and let him try to prove himself.”
The Other Signing
Stackhouse started 42 games for the Bulldogs, and while he didn’t rack up a ton of sacks, he did start. You don’t start for the Georgia Bulldogs if you don’t have talent. McShay was actually surprised he wasn’t drafted.
“I actually thought Stackhouse would get drafted. I knew Brinson had a really good shot late to get drafted, and Stackhouse actually showed up and flashed a little bit more. They both play with gap discipline. I thought Stackhouse had a little bit more quickness and flashed a little more. I think they want to bring him in and test to see if maybe he can surprise. He showed up big in some moments for Georgia. So, that to me is a great signing.”
It is another Georgia defensive lineman for the Green Bay Packers in this draft. They took Warren Brinson in the fifth round, and they need some help on the defensive line after losing TJ Slaton in free agency.
Final Thoughts
Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst loves drafting Georgia Bulldogs. He has shown an affinity for those players, and these are two more who have a shot at making the final 53-man roster. These are two players to watch as the rookie minicamps begin.
