Ireland to be hit by 'very heavy' downpours - but warmer weather on the way (2025)

Ireland will be hit by heavy downpours later today, with parts of the country set to see up to 40mm of rainfall.

A weather expert has warned that we are in for a miserable day as a band of "very heavy rain" will move across the country on Tuesday affecting all 32 counties.

In a weather update issued on Monday evening, Alan O'Reilly, the hobbyist meteorologist behind the popular Carlow Weather social media pages, said that it will be a wet and gloomy day for most, but that there's better news as we head towards the weekend.

"Tuesday will start off dry but then very heavy rain moving across the country west to east," he said.

"So west first then east in the afternoon but clearing. But then Tuesday evening, you can look at the rainfall totals, over 10 millimeters for most parts of the country, over 20mm for some and possibly over 40mm on the Morne Mountains in the northeast.

"So unfortunately more heavy rain on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will be mixed [with] sunny spells and showers.

"Looks like more heavy rain moving in, possibly Thursday evening, Thursday night and Friday looks wet and cool.

"It's not very certain how much rain falling Friday, little bit of uncertainty around that. Next weekend looks a bit better, sunny spells and showers, but watch out for that rain Tuesday and Friday."

While spells of heavy rain are expected throughout the week, Met Eireann has pinpointed when the dry and sunny weather will make a welcome return.

According to the national forecaster there will be further showers or spells of rain for Sunday and early next week "before high pressure becomes more dominant for midweek".

Here's what you need to know about the weather forecast for the coming days, according to Met Eireann's latest forecast.

Tuesday, April 22

Cloudy with rain in the west extending eastwards through the morning and early afternoon with some heavy downpours possible and moderate to fresh southeasterly winds. Rain will clear western areas later this afternoon with sunny spells and showers following as winds turn southwesterly. Highest temperatures of 10C to 14C degrees.

Mostly cloudy at first tonight with showers or some outbreaks of rain, becoming lighter and patchier as it clears southwards through the night with clear spells following from the north. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 9C degrees in light to moderate northerly or variable winds with some mist and fog patches developing.

Wednesday, April 23

Mist and fog patches will clear tomorrow morning leaving a mix of cloud and sunny spells and with well scattered showers developing. Better sunny spells will develop later in the day. Highest temperatures of 12C to 16C in light to moderate northerly or variable breezes.

Dry with mostly clear skies on Wednesday night though it will turn cloudier in the southwest. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 8C in light easterly or variable breezes with some mist and fog patches developing.

Thursday, April 24

Mist and fog will clear through the morning. Plenty of dry weather for most with sunny spells and just a few light showers.

However, it will be cloudier in the west and southwest with outbreaks of rain and drizzle developing through the morning and afternoon, turning more persistent in the evening. Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C or 17C in light to moderate southeasterly breezes.

Dry in the north and east at first on Thursday night with some clear spells but turning cloudier as rain in the west and southwest slowly extends further eastwards. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 11C in a mostly moderate southeast wind.

Friday, April 25

A wet morning with widespread rain. Through the afternoon and evening, the rain will clear from the west to sunny spells and scattered showers, some of which could be heavy or thundery.

Highest temperatures of 11C to 16C, coolest in the north and east, with a moderate southeasterly wind, easing southwesterly as the rain clears.

Becoming largely dry with clear spells early in the night though some mist and fog will develop. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C.

Saturday, April 26

Sunny spells and scattered showers or longer spells of rain expected. Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C or 17C in light to moderate southwesterly winds, fresher for Atlantic coasts.
