Review by Krommedijk ★★★
Decent film adaptation of the story that has been the subject of various books and films. The version starring Rutger Hauer as Freddie Heineken may be slightly better, but that doesn't make this film bad. It might be important to point out that the Heineken kidnappers have been in charge of the Dutch criminal circuit for years after the kidnapping - until about a decade (or two) ago. Compared to that, things have happened where the Heineken kidnapping was child's play. However, it's been an entertaining watch - nothing more than that.

Enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. The story was very interesting, and that’s before I saw it was based on true events. The cast was good, but even sitting in a corner for most of the film, Hopkins brought so much presence to the film. Definitely worth a look.

There are two ways a man can be rich in this world, he can have a lot of money, or he can have a lot of friends. But he cannot have both.
-Freddy HeinekenOne of the highest profile kidnappings in history is retold here through solid directing from Daniel Alfredson with a great cast giving good performances working from a Made-for-TV quality script.
Even though the film says it's based on the book from Peter R. de Vries, the film barely covers anything outside what you'd read in the Wikipedia entry of the famous crime. There is no sense of the personalities involved from the kidnappers to Freddy Heineken played by Anthony Hopkins.
We have no idea what kind…

Did the real Freddy Heineken blow a kiss at one of his kidnappers after asking him if he was gay or was that just Anthony Hopkins’ special touch?

Review by Travis Lytle ★★½
Though Daniel Alfredson folds some high-tension moments into his "Kidnapping Mr. Heineken," the real-life-based drama is a mostly milquetoast retelling a high-profile kidnapping. Tracking the abduction of Anthony Hopkins' Freddy Heineken, the film follows the machinations behind the crime and the motivations of its perpetrators. The color-drained production is at its best when the film's energy is high, but the script and work, in general, seem more inclined to take the low electricity approach. The film is watchable, but it lacks intrigue and punch.

Review by Andy Summers 🤠 ★★ 2
Sometimes you simply have to accept that certain great actors will eventually reach the stage in their careers when a paycheque means more than the quality of the production they've signed on for. Michael Caine admitted he did it for years to pay the bills and came out the other side of it with a host of starring roles that reinvigorated him as an actor for a new generation of fans. Anthony Hopkins is unfortunately in the middle of a fairly long line of mediocre films that don't deserve either his time or his talent, and Kidnapping Mr. Heineken is another of them.
Back in 1983 five Dutch friends decided to kidnap Freddy Heineken for a huge ransom. It was… -

Nothing you haven't seen before in any other kidnapping/ransom crime drama, although that's a little disappointing considering this is based on a true story. This is exactly how I'd expect Anthony Hopkins to act if he were ever kidnapped, by the way.

Review by Connor Lightbody ★★½
So these guys rob a bank, to get the money, to get the supplies, so they can kidnap someone...to get more money.
Flawless logic...
Especially because the reason they wanted the supplies was to look like it wasn't them. But they've robbed the bank as amateur robbers and....This script BAFFLES me.
So many scenes with this "high tension" but then....completely anti-climactic. The payoff on these scenes just don't, well, pay off.
"You fucking morons" Anthony Hopkins as Mr Heineken who is the best part of this movie
That quote preeeetty much sums up this film.

This might be the first movie I've seen with Sam Worthington in it that I liked.

To answer your question, yes, Jim Sturgess and Sam Worthington do bring all of their charisma and star power to this film.
