Rose Creek Golf Course Memorial Overhaul: Honoring 'Goose' Johnson (2025)

A heartfelt tribute to Bob "Goose" Johnson, the former superintendent of the Fargo Park District, is undergoing a significant transformation. This renovation, however, has nothing to do with the usual golf course upgrades; it's a story of honoring a legacy.

Rose Creek golf course, located in the heart of south Fargo, has been a witness to history. It was under Johnson's leadership that the course opened its doors in 1993. His retirement in 1996 marked the end of an era, and his passing in 2002 left a void that the "Bob 'Goose' Johnson Memorial Garden" aimed to fill.

But here's where it gets controversial: the memorial garden, once a serene pond surrounded by lush plants and shrubs, fell into disrepair. The Park District has decided to take action, and the pond, which had been plagued by leaking issues, has been filled in. The plants have been trimmed back, and a new chapter is about to begin.

Rocky Papachek, the golf director for the Fargo Park District, shared his vision: "We're seizing this chance to rejuvenate and revitalize the space." The staff plans to design a fresh memorial to Johnson over the winter, with a rededication ceremony scheduled for late spring or early summer.

And this is the part most people miss: the memorial rock dedicated to Johnson will remain, serving as a constant reminder of his impact. Papachek emphasized, "It will be a focal point of the memorial garden, reflecting our dedication to honoring Goose's enduring influence on our parks and community."

Johnson's tenure as director from 1970 to 1996 was marked by his visionary spirit. He was a key figure in the creation of the Fargodome, which opened its doors in 1993, alongside the Rose Creek golf course.

The course itself has seen its fair share of renovations, including a levee upgrade in 2016 to tackle flood issues from the adjacent Rose Coulee. Most of the back nine holes were revamped, with two holes completely relocated.

This story is a testament to the power of remembrance and the impact one individual can have on a community. It's a reminder that even in the quiet spaces of a golf course, legacies can be celebrated and honored.
